Agriculture, Agro Processing & Agribusiness
Botswana's food security is a high priority for government since there is a large dependence on import for food products supply and as such the government has put in place various programs to support the development of agriculture and related industries.
Culturally, Batswana are very active farmers (both pastoral and arable), with almost all households owning livestock posts and/or ploughing fields for subsistence or part time supplementary income purposes. Commercial farmers exist, albeit not to the extent and diversity of product that could place the country at a sufficient level of food security. It is this commercialization wherein the opportunities lie in areas including, but not limited to:
- Hydroponics and aquaponics
- Orchards
- Grain production
- Food processing and manufacturing (cereals, sauces, jams, etc...)
- Fish farming
- Agricultural technology (e.g. Irrigation, soil health monitoring, animal health)
- Commercial goat farming
- Commercial sheep farming (meat and wool)
- Commercial Dairy farming
- Piggeries
- Small stock abattoirs (slaughter, processing, packaging and export)
- Animal production technology
Botswana has plenty of readily available land and water supply in various parts of the country suitable for agribusiness. Most notably, Botswana has a population with the passion and skills to engage in agricultural related ventures.
